The disadvantage of cutting out the Y-splitter? You lose an Due east-Tube port. If you do this you'll be down to a single unused E-Tube port. This means you won't be able to connect multiple satellite shifters.

Personally I don't use any additional shifters, just this will be different for everyone.

Installing the junction
